We have five matching solid brass Chiavari ballroom chairs, hand polished and with seats newly upholstered in emerald green velvet. Price shown is per chair. The famous 'Chiavarina' was created in 1807 by the finest Ligurian ebanist of his day, Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi di Chiavari (1767-1855), who had been asked by the Marquis Stefano Rivarola, to create a chair that would rival the popular Napoleonic style salon chair he had brought back from Paris. By simplifying the decorative Apparatus, stripping the upholstery, reducing the sections of the structural elements and using local materials, a design star was born, destined to become world famous for lightness, strength, elegance and functionality. Originally named Campanina, as an homage to Descalzi's mother whose family were the bell keepers. The success was immediate, in 1841 the king of Italy Carlo Alberto proclaimed the workshop of Descalzi: "royal manufacture". In a short time, the "bell" became a cult object also for the European aristocracy, even people like Canova and Napoleon III expressed admiration for the production of Descalzi. It therefore happens that in the Ligurian territory other numerous shops flourished dedicated to the production of homologous seats, their export to all European courts meant that this product became known with the name from the strong territorial connotation of "chiavarina". It even inspired Gio Ponti to design his iconic Superleggera chair. Perfect for anywhere accents, for a writing desk or as boudoir chairs.
