1940s Danish Settee by Alfred Christensen in Tan Shearling

Charming 1940s Danish settee designed by Alfred Christensen for Slagelse Mobelvaerk. The frame is characterized by Christensen's signature curved paddle arms, complemented by the backrest comprised of traditional round spindles. The piece is newly lacquered and reupholstered in luxurious tan shearling from Skandilock. Dimensions 64.5 in. width 29 in. depth 34 in. height 18 in. seat height Condition Notes: In good condition. Newly reupholstered and lacquered. Light wear to wood frame consistent with the settee's age and use.

    Danish Modern focused more on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen known as cabinetmakers. Alfred Christensen’s present sofa in this style is a rare and exquisite example of this. This sofa has the characteristic ‘open armrest’ design that showcases the high level craftsmanship and the beautiful walnut structure as well. Clean and pure lines define this model that are coupled with expert craftsmanship and delicate research into proportions, materials and the requirements of the human body, adapting design to modern-day needs. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, Christensen maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking. In consequence, this three-seater sofa has an elegant but still warm look thanks to its rounded edges and open execution. The only form of ornamentation - apart from the bent armrests - is the button tufting on the back. The light colour of the textural upholstery in combination with the dark walnut legs create an aesthetic that is perfect to bring a modern touch to any space.
