About the Item

This stunning Art Deco Machine Age sofa was realized by the legendary Eugene Schoen in the United States circa 1935. It features three seat and back cushions; streamlined sides; and a stacked skyscraper style back- all newly reupholstered in a luxurious (and period appropriate) smoked platinum velvet. The sofa sits on rotund conical walnut front feet with ogee brackets (also in walnut) in back and offers a generally appointed upholstered apron traced at its bottom in walnut. With its clean modernist lines and refined color palate, this piece is as versatile as it is aesthetically compelling, blending perfectly with any style of interior from classic Deco to contemporary. It has been newly reupholstered and restored to mint condition. Eugene Schoen (1880 – 1957) was an American architect and designer. He created high-quality Art Deco Furniture with heavy French influence. He was born and professionally active in New York and one of the few American born designers to achieve success during the 20s and 30s. Schoen studied architecture, at Columbia University, in New York until 1901 as well as at the Akademie der bildenden Künste, Vienna, under Otto Wagner and others. In Vienna, he met Secessionist architects Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffman, who was also the founder of the Wiener Werkstätte, and would serve as a formative influence on Schoen's practice. He set up his architecture practice in New York in 1905 and, after visiting the 1925 Paris ‘Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes.‘ In 1931, he became a professor of interior architecture at New York University. Schoen designed the interiors of numerous apartments, banks, theatres, and department stores in Manhattan and elsewhere, including Dunhill’s interior at Rockefeller Center and Dunhill’s earlier store. His furniture was rendered in neoclassical forms with exotic wood veneers in a striking amalgamation of various contemporary European styles.
