About the Item

The influence of the Art Deco movement was significant on early Scandinavian modernism, resulting in a unique aesthetic mixture based on traditional craftsmanship and quality. In this beautiful and distinctive sofa, simple horizontal and vertical lines as well as the different materials are emphasized to create an outstanding design. In many ways, this three-seater sofa recalls the Art Deco style of the 1930s with the recognizable touch of Danish Modernism. From the embracing shell back to its sectioned upholstery, the decorative elements are present, still, the overall streamlined modernism of the era dominate the look. This hybrid aesthetic mainly relies on the fully upholstered body in a light bouclé fabric. From the front, the back is sectioned into three parts, while on the back, the sectioning is done in a much closer proximity that recalls the Art Deco style especially. There are multiple elements that distinguish it from the rest. Such a detail can be seen on the sides of the back where the enveloping curve is abruptly broken by the cascading sides. Unlike most banana sofas, here the back is separated from the seat visually at the end of the sides, creating further visual interest for the profile of the sofa. Another detail are the brass “shoes” on the stained beech legs that add a more modern touch and lift off the design visually. Finally, the blue accent pillow highlights the other fabrics while adding a pop of colour to the look. Apart from the visual appearance, the exquisite craftsmanship of this sofa echoes Art Deco as well. Many of the well-known Danish architects felt the urge to try their hands at “Nordic Art Deco”, even though the style’s focus on luxury and decorative elements is in its nature in opposition to the ideas behind Danish design. Nevertheless, in combination with the unadorned style of Danish mid-century modern design, this sofa brings together the best of both styles. The pairing of the light bouclé, the beech wood, and brass create a visual treat that is sure to stand out. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The “Great Danes” believed furniture should be shorn of aesthetic detail and be an amalgam of form and function. A master cabinetmaker is not a carpenter, as this was a rare breed of craftsman who had to be recognized by the Danish government after several years of toiling at his craft, as well as having to ace gruelling design competitions before becoming a master cabinetmaker. Since Denmark was a special instance of tempered industrialization, it managed to preserve sound traditions and continue to safeguard values of craftsmanship, materiality, and usability.
