Early 19th Century Parcel Gilt Classical New York Sofa, circa 1820

About the Item

A spectacular American Empire sofa with exquisite detailing and design. One of the masterpieces of Federal New York furniture, this circa 1820 parcel gilt sofa with faux bois Rosewood graining almost certainly originates from the same shop as a reclaimer in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's American Wing and a sofa in the Cleveland Museum of Art. All three pieces share the same intricate freehand gilt designs with with delicately incised shading and hatching techniques. The rich olive green/sage mohair velvet fabric was selected from traces amounts of original silk thread discovered during conservation. A powerful, regal piece of seating furniture from the early United States. Attributed to Deming & Bulkley.

If desired, it would be possible to refresh gilt detailing to the scrolls and feet and return the paws to their original verdigris.
