Suede and Steel Sofa by Jacques Charpentier (attr.), France 1970s
About the Item
In the 1970s, the power of television sparked a profound shift in households and a sofa became a "must-have". Sofas became the core of the "Les Contemporains" collection at French retailer, Roche Bobois, with this rare model in their famed repertoire.
This stunning three-seater sofa stands on a plinth in polished stainless steel. This design feature immediately sets the modern edge of this model, making the contrast of its materials’ texture, colour, and look the main design element. The seat and back form a permanently reclined angle, with six individual cushions comprising the seat and back. The brown suede fabric covers the cushions with deep stitches enhancing the fabric’s luxurious qualities. The contrast between the brushed steel and suede is stark, which creates tension. Still, the sofa is in perfect visual balance thanks to the carefully measured proportions. In the absence of arms, the design remains very open and light despite the characteristic materials. The design is commonly attributed to Jacques Charpentier, who was a French decorator and editor. He studied at the Boulle School and graduated in 1945 after which he began his career by opening a workshop in Paris, where from the 1960s, he designed stainless steel sofas. By the end of 1970, his company had nearly sixty employees.
This Roche Bobois edition sofa model has a unique upholstery with patinated suede in a rich brown colour that lends a stylish, modern look that is reminiscent of the 1970s. In combination with the steel base, this model commands the space it is placed in, and is sure to draw attention.

- "EJ315" Two-Seater Sofa by Erik Ole Jørgensen, Denmark 1970sBy Erik Ole Jørgensen, Fredericia StolefabrikLocated in Utrecht, NLErik Jørgensen’s furniture workshop was founded in in Svendborg in 1954 by upholsterer Erik Jørgensen, who mastered the art of combining comfort and craftsmanship with timeless design. Jørgensen’s company developed into a well-reputed furniture upholstering company within a few years. This original design by Erik Ole Jørgensen was created in 1975 and produced by Fredericia Furniture. The “EJ315” series was designed by Erik Jørgensen himself, who, as a designer, is known for his classic and functional sofas. The sofa is part of his original collection - outside the Erik Jørgensen Studio - representing Jørgensen's original design values which were particularly characterized by his sense of materials, compositions, and high level of detail. Through his years as a furniture architect, he has built up a large portfolio of different sofas, all of which share these values. The series and therefore this model also showcases the superb carpentry that underpins the final look and quality of the furniture. The frame is made of machined wood with a clear structure and grain, adding an organic element to the furniture. The seat and back are constructed with a tightly padded shell with perfectly proportioned cushions that balance a sophisticated look with comfort. Dozens of buttons are hand-stitched onto the cushions to create a visually playful look that also embraces contemporary trends along with the striped upholstery. An upright backrest and high armrests help to create a formal seating experience that is ideal in conversational environments or in lobbies as well as hotels. Jørgensen designed this series and this specific sofa model for the world-famous Danish company, Fredericia. Since its foundation in 1911, the family-owned company Fredericia has built a strong tradition of craftsmanship and design, developed in close collaboration with a circle of internationally recognized designers. Fredericia originally specialized in upholstery production. From the start, the products are known for their high level of craftsmanship, which is evident in this sofa as well. Erik Jørgensen has combined good craftsmanship with exceptional comfort for decades, qualities that went on to become the starting point for functional design with a Scandinavian aesthetic. An Erik Jørgensen sofa...Category
