Chinese Black Lacquer Square Stool, c. 1850

About the Item

Paying tribute to the humble virtues of bamboo, ribbed woodwork wraps the legs and creates a stepped apron for this square stool, known as a fang deng. Expertly crafted from elm foraged from the forests of northern China, this stool was made in the mid-19th century. This time-honored design speaks to modern sensibilities in its clean lines and earnest interpretation of natural materials.
