'Lightweight Porcelain' Children's Stool and Side Table by Djim Berger - Green
About the Item
Evoking a beehive or or an intriguing mineral like pumice stone, this ‘Lightweight Porcelain’ stool is part of Djim Berger’s ‘Lightweight Porcelain’ collection exclusively produced for Galerie BSL since 2010. Djim Berger is a graduate of the celebrated Eindhoven Design Academy in the Netherlands. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France.
‘Lightweight Porcelain’ brings porcelain to new and unchartered territories, in search of a material that is visually and sensually renewed. “The goal of my work is to open the spectrum of porcelain, says the artist. I experience it, make it take risks; I combine it to find new forms, colours and techniques. I want to help it reveal its true potential; bring porcelain where it has never been before.” Djim Berger has reinvented porcelain to create playfully tactile seating that challenges our perceptions of a conventionally fragile material. His pioneering method boasts the lightness of porcelain while making it significantly sturdier, transforming it into a functional material for stools, benches and side tables.
‘Lightweight Porcelain’ is available in three models and 35 colours, each in a limited edition. They are indoor-outdoor and are often purchased with multiple pieces to create functional installations that also fill a space like sculptures.
Dimensions and weight of the three models in the ‘Lightweight Porcelain’ collection are as follows:

- Cult Stool, Sculptural Side Table, Mexican Green OnyxBy Maika PalazuelosLocated in Ciudad de México, CDMXCult stool/ side table; a hand sculpted stone from a Mexican marble and Mexican onyx conglomerate, remits to primal sculptural-architectural language while displaying materials in a modernist manner. The piece allows for the specificity of the material’s eccentric pattern formations to rein over its final appearance. Each edition; a unique piece. Working with rocks that are endemic to Mexico contextualizes the work at a geological level. Situating the pieces in a continuing and evolving historical narrative. Like taking part in an archeological exploration, working with native stones reveal a heritage of meticulous craftsmanship developed under the possibilities and limitations of local materials. When sculpting stone, you only get one chance to get things right. As each rock is different one must tailor form onto the material, in the way of discovering what each piece hides.
