Art Deco Era Windsor Chair by Walter Sobotka Circle of Josef Frank, Vienna, 1932

About the Item

Art Deco Era Windsor chair design attributed to Walter Sobotka Vienna 1932. The WIndsor chair from solid oakwood features a saddle seat and conical feet. Walter Sobotka (1888 Vienna - 1972 New York) has a leading position in 1929 and also from 1932 - 1934 he was Vice President of the Austrian Werkbund. He designed for the Austrian Werkbundsiedlung in the 14th district 2 buildings. In the interwar period he worked in the circle of Jaques Groag, Felix Augenfeld and Josef Frank very successful. For a short time Walter Sobotka was envolved in the interior company Haus & Garten by Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach, while he was conneceted with Josef Frank in friendship. Please compare a very similar Windsor chair, which was designed by Josef Frank. Windsor chairs are a type of chairs which very often used and preferred in the Interwar period. The architects and furniture designers have this type taken over from the cosy and livable English interior. Today we would say it is cottagecore. Lit: Bentwood and Beyond Thonet and Modern Furniture Design, Sebastian Hackenschmidt and Wolfgang Thillmann, page 217 The chair is in very good condition All measures are approximate.
