George II Mahogany Wing Chair

About the Item

This antique English wing chair dates back to the early 18th century during the George II period. It is upholstered and raised on carved mahogany cabriole legs with carved acanthus knees and ball and claw feet. For added convenience, it is also raised on substantial brass castors. Wing chairs were designed to provide comfort and protection to the sitter. They were specifically designed to shield the sitter from draughts, which was no doubt an uncomfortable frequent experience in 18th century England. The high back, raised armrests, and sides of the chair act as a barrier, providing a sense of security and warmth.
