17th Century English Leather Travel Trunk on Later Stand

About the Item

This interesting period trunk, circa 1680-1700 is constructed of wood that has been banded in iron then covered with embossed leather and brass tacks and spandrels creating a decorative and strong travel box for a gentleman’s possessions. The trunks decorative elements contain birds, squirrels, flowers and arabesques. All the edges are bound in iron and there is iron strapping under the leather to reinforce the frame. With large locks, the truck would have spoken to a gentleman's status when he traveled. The interior is lined with what we believe to be almost its original certainly 18th-century paper showing its long service as a travel and storage truck. The stand made in the 1920s to more fully appreciate the trunk is in walnut and was custom-made to set the trunk on. The Stand has some gilded and polychromed shield decorative elements lining up with the lock plates and are present on three sides of the stand. The style of the stand is a combination of Jacobean and Elizabethan forms but works well with the trunk and was most likely made in England before the piece was imported to this country. The piece would look great at the end of a bed and is large enough to house bedclothes or whatever a client might need. • 17th Century, William and Mary Chinoiserie Trunk on Stand
    Located in Nashville, TN
Featured is an extremely rare 17th century Dutch William & Mary Chinoiserie style coffer trunk on stand. This gorgeous piece was constructed of oak in the traditional William and Mary style. The trunk is japanned with red lacquer and was hand painted with Chinoiserie scenes of life in China. There are two iron straps that mount the top to the case. There is also one iron lock, although the key is absent the latch closes and holds the top securely in place. The lacquer is 90% complete with only small losses around the edges and in various places. The top has been reinforced with oak straps underneath to prevent the jointed board from moving. The lacquer has a warm patina throughout and shows very well. The lower stand is fitted with a pair of drawers that are also japanned and hand-painted with Chinoiserie scenes on the drawer fronts. Both drawers are fitted with Dutch style brass tear drop pulls. The stand itself is built of oak with turned legs that are pinned together with traditionally carved Jacobean Influenced leg stretchers on both the right and left sides as well as one main lower center stretcher. If you are looking for a very rare and well preserved piece this is the one. This item was almost surely on a Dutch East India Trading company...
