19th Century Zanzibar Chest

About the Item

This is a very good example of a 19th century Zanzibar storage chest. The chest was created in the mid-19th century. The teak case is adorned with cut and open work brass strapping in addition to nail head decoration. The chest shows a deep natural patina. Minor sections of the brass strapping have been lost. The chest is further detailed with a series of small drawers along the bottom of the chest. The larger dimensions of the chest allow it to be used as a decorative element or placed where a table or case piece could be used. This is a very substantial piece of furniture which would add heft to any space. It would integrate well into Spanish or Italian design themes--even Gothic or Renaissance Revival would be comfortable with the chest.
