Antique Spanish Colonial Period Leather Carved Cedar Travel Chest

About the Item

A scarce 300-year-old Spanish Colonial period leather clad and carved travel chest with beautifully aged patina. circa 1725 Born in the first half of the 18th century, this small scale chest would have been used by a Spanish colonist / settler traveling to the America's, featuring a hand-crafted cedar wood case with quality hand-cut dovetail construction, having leather clad domed lid, with varied nailhead trim, over rectangular case with elaborate chip carving pinwheel design and original forged iron hardware. Dimensions: (approx) 13.5" High, 18" Wide, 10.5" Deep; 10.75 lb A superb museum quality example, in excellent original unrestored antique condition. Well preserved, it presents well, with nicely aged warm rustic heavily distressed patina. Wear consistent with age and use, including scattered losses. Strong, sturdy, stable, and structurally sound.
