"City Hall" Chest, Walnut, Wrought Iron, Castile Spain, 17th Century

About the Item

This type of "City Council" or "Council" is called by its three locks, each of which closes with its respective key. These furniture were used in any type of organization, religious or civil, to store valuables, documents or money and delivered each of the keys to a responsible, being essential that the three meet for the opening of the furniture, avoiding any possible temptation. They were a very common element in councils or city councils of towns and other towns, hence its name. Stylistically, it is placed inside the Baroque by the forcefulness of the lower molding and the movement that contribute the legs and the forms of the different ironworks. The typology was already used in Gothic times and, given its success, would continue to be commonplace in the workshops of cabinetmakers and carpenters for many centuries. Sometimes they were made of iron, and, in very few cases, three keys were used as the closing of an ark in silver (the one containing the body of San Isidro, Madrid). In many places, such as La Rioja, it was used as a municipal archives, following laws inheriting a pragmatics of June 9, 1500 with which the Catholic Kings forced the Councils of their territories to build town houses, prisons and have a chest of Privileges and deeds. In spite of having been so abundant in his time, we have not come many examples to have fallen into disuse and to be replaced. Compare with the Town Council of Villafranca de la Marisma (Los Palacios and Villafranca, Seville), Valdipiélago (León), Matapozuelos (Valladolid), and Cabildo de Buenos Aires de Argentina (18th century, etc." Size: 152 x 67.5 x 76 cms.
