Early 19th Century Re-Purposed English Trunk

About the Item

While we usually stick to pieces that are in their original condition, this piece intrigued us so we made an exception. Sometime in the late 19th-early 20th century, this piece went through a transformation. From flip-top trunk or blanket chest to a small cabinet with shelves on rails and front opening doors. The front of the chest was removed, sawn in two, hinged, and fitted with lock and key. While the top was securely fastened to the body and two shelves of maple made to slide in and out of the front of the piece. The original interior hinges for the lid are still visible from the back of the piece (image 5) while faux decorative hinges have been added to the case top. The opposing colors of the dark stained oak case and the light natural maple shelves is lovely.
