Walnut and Metal Chest with Two Locks, 17th Century

About the Item

Rectangular chest with flat top raised on six legs with disc shape finished by moldings. The fronts of the furniture have a smooth area down, a thin molding that is repeated on the top and a finish, also molded, on the lid. Also, it is possible to appreciate, in metal on cloth, different metal fittings and corners, with "fleur-de-lis" shaped profiles and circular shapes. The two horseshoe shields, draped to reveal the fabric, feature a series of geometrically arranged moldings flanking a vertical axis; to the sides, in addition, there are two handles, with a similar metallic decoration applied to the wood and formed by a bar in oval form finished in two simplified volutes and a disc in the part that would catch. The interior has a small enclosed and reserved space, to one side of the furniture. The lines of the furniture follow the usual in the Spanish cabinets since the middle Ages, and are the decorative elements (especially the hardware, but also the legs and what the decorative moldings stand out) that place the work within the Baroque of the 17th century by its curves. Also, this would be a typology that will continue to be used later, logically changing the decoration. Walnut wood is the most frequent in Spanish furniture because of its size, its abundance at the time and its strength and durability. The arks and chests were used frequently in both the Middle Ages and the modern, to store a wide variety of objects (clothes, dishes, metals, etc.). In this case, the presence of two keys suggests that money or some precious asset would be saved, because this detail could allude to the need for two civil or religious offices necessary for the opening of the same. Size: 69 x 158 x 77 cms.
