1930s Weimar Republic Bauhaus German Modernist Secretaire Bookcase Suite Walnut
About the Item
This rare living room suite comprises three individual pieces and is a super example of early European modernist furniture. Typical of the period, the suite has a Minimalist appearance devoid of unnecessary ornament, celebrating the natural materials whilst still offering a substantial and varied storage capability.
Manufactured in the late 20s/early 30s by furniture manufacturer Georg Schöttle of Stuttgart, the suite is of superb quality, constructed of blockboard over-veneered in bookmatched figured walnut with nickel and brass metalwork.
Consisting of a two-door cabinet containing adjustable shelves and a single drawer. The second cabinet features a full width display shelf behind a pair of sliding glass doors. Below this, a fall front bureau section lined in maple, a small cupboard, a pair of drawers and a two door cupboard with adjustable shelves. The third cabinet features four adjustable bookshelves behind a large pair of glass doors above a pair of drawers and two door cupboard with adjustable shelves.
All three pieces have the maker’s plaque “Stuttgarter Moebelfabrik, George Schoettle, G.M.B.H Stuttgart”. The bureau door furniture and brass quarter turn shelf clips are all stamped DRGM – (Deutsches Reich Gebrauchs Muster) a form of copyright and its use helps to date the set to before the war.
Condition:
All of the glass is original, with only a couple of minor nibbles, which are mostly hidden. All of the locks are original - only two of the original three keys have survived, the third key for the two-door cupboard is a later addition. One of the drawers has been forced open in the past, leaving a small area of damage and scratch. The Bureau section has a small area of veneer loss to the base of the left hand side, which has been repaired – see last two images.
