19th Century French Louis XV Walnut Bookcase

About the Item

19th century French Louis XV walnut bookcase is a masterpiece of the cabinetmaker's art! The luxurious nature of the coveted French walnut exudes a sophistication unmatched by any other native European wood. The artisans have rendered it justice with this example, starting with the majestic and artistic crown embellishment centered on the boldly arched crown overlooking the entire work. The motif depicts asymmetrical shells in a crashing wave form surrounded by floral and foliate sprays in the classic Rococo genre. The two glazed doors below that allow one to fully appreciate the keepsakes housed within atop 5 adjustable shelves, have been defined by both vertical and scrolled muntins overlaid onto the glass, while below the glazing appears a solid walnut carved panel sculpted to depict musical instruments surrounded by various scrollwork style molded detail. The lower cornerposts display a pronounced shoulder leading the eye down to the upturned acanthus flourish just above the escargot feet, and the cornerposts provide a framework for the lavishly sculpted and scrolled apron which provides the perfect finishing touch! Circa 1880s Measures 103H x 52W x 16D.
