  • Antique Georgian George II Figured Walnut Bookcase Bureau Secretary Desk, 1750
    Located in Portland, OR
    A very fine antique George II figured and inlaid walnut bureau bookcase/secretary, circa 1750. The bookcase secretary in two secrions, the upper bookcase having a stepped crown with twin arched mirrored doors below, the mirror to the right side having a reversed engraved flower and the doors enclosing three adjustable shelves. The base having a fall front with a fitted writing surface, the interior is extravagantly fitted with eight pigeonholes, six drawers with a central carved arched door flanked with ribbed columns. The door having a secret switch to the inside allowing the whole 'box' to be withdrawn, therefore providing access to two secret drawers to the verso. The base having twin pull-out lopers to support the fall front, below are four long and two short drawers, the cabinet is raised on bracket feet. The bookcase secretary is made from the finest figured walnut which is crossbanded & inlaid with satinwood stringing, the cabinet has all the original brass handles, lockplates/escutcheons. A diminutive bureau bookcase In two parts, the top having a stepped cornice with twin doors below, the doors having very unusual astragal decoration of neo-classical urns with swags & surmounted with 'Prince of Wales' fleur des lys finials, the doors enclosing three shelves and three short inlaid drawers. The base having an inlaid fall front & oval floral paterae enclosing a fitted interior with six pigeon holes four drawers and a central locking door with shell inlay, the writing surface having a red 'bull's blood' tooled & gilded leather. Below are three inlaid drawers with the original brass handles, the base having a single 'secret' drawer and the bookcase is raised on tall 'French' bracket feet. Featuring a moulded carved cornice with inscription ‘J.S. & L.E.S. TO V.R.C. JUNE 7TH 1911’ above a leaded green bullion glass door and open shelves, the bureau fall-front opening to reveal various pigeon holes and a quarter-sawn oak writing surface, with a drawer and pairs of cupboard doors below and three further drawers to the side.
