Ref: 0713 Provenance: Kellie Castle, Fife, Lorimer family Kellie Castle is is a historic castle in Fife, Scotland and a fine example of Scots Baronial domestic architecture with an imposing mix of gables, corbelled towers, and chimneys. The oldest part of the castle dates back to as early as 1360 and was once home to one of Robert the Bruce’s daughters. It was abandoned in 1829 and was a near ruin when it was rented from the Earl of Mar and Kellie in 1878 by Professor James Lorimer, who began restoring and furnishing the castle for use as a holiday retreat. James Lorimer was father to Sir Robert Lorimer, the renowned Scottish architect, and John Henry Lorimer, the famous Scottish painter, and it soon became the family home. After James’ death the lease stayed in the family latterly being taken up by Sir Robert’s Lorimer’s son, the sculptor Hew Lorimer and his wife, Mary, who eventually purchased the castle in 1948. Although Hew Lorimer sold the castle to the National Trust for Scotland in 1970 he continued to live in part of the castle until 1990 and today the castle has a permanent exhibition of his work. This bookcase was made by Garnett & Sons around the time that Professor James Lorimer acquired the lease and commenced the furnishing of Kellie. Garnett & Sons were a successful family of cabinetmakers trading in Lancashire from c.1824-1912. They exhibited at the Art Treasures Exhibition of 1861 in Manchester and the Jubilee Exhibition, Manchester, 1887. Commissions included the Bishop's Palace at Lincoln, Osmaston Manor, Derbyshire, Bradford Town Hall Council Chamber, Lever Bros' Port Sunlight Offices and they also exported to other countries.
