Barboure Unit in Rosso Portogallo and Bianco Carrara Marble
About the Item
The Barboure Unit was designed by Kevin Frankental. Inspired by Durban Art Deco Architecture and in particular the architecture of Barboure and Langton architects in 1937. The Barboure is made from 20mm slabs of Rosso Portogallo and Bianco Carrara marble. The curved edges are filled and polished by hand, a very time consuming process. This was chosen to keep the weight of the unit low. Please note you do see small join lines on the curves.
Each section is modular and joined by brass plates.
The Concept
A homage to Durban's Art Deco Buildings in South Africa
The word Art Deco evokes memories of Hollywood between the wars and the
movement spread around the world between 1925 and 1940. The name Art
Deco came from the Paris Exhibition Internationale des Ar ts Décoratifs et Industriels Moderernes held in Paris in 1925. It was a new style celebrating a
new era. The sensuous lines of Ar t Nouveau gave way to the jagged rhythms
of Art Deco. The new style celebrated the machine age with geometric lines
and shape with vibrant colour schemes. Characterised by unfunctional “modernism” it soon spread to the United States and Europe during the building
boom in the 1930s. Recognisable by repetitive geometric patterns, stylised
organic and animal motifs, sunbursts and sensuous colours. Many Of Ar t Deco’s
greatest pr actitioners worked in man y media (Ar t, ar chitecture, int erior
design, jewellery, film sets) including Frank Llyod Wright, Ely Jaques Kahn
and Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to name a few.

Lemon
To us, good design is thoughtful design. We live comfortably in the space where beauty and function meet and aim always to create pieces that are both useful and decorative. We obsess over how our designs are made. It’s crucial for us to always strike a balance between the practical and the aesthetic, form and function, and essential that our pieces feel good to use as well as to look at. We believe that it’s the small design details that make this difference. We design with longevity in mind. The antithesis of mass production, our pieces represent our belief in conscious consumption, the idea that less is more and that universal beauty has no expiration date. We work with manufacturers who understand this – and who share the same passion for quality and considered design. To ensure that our quality is never compromised, we seek out specialists in their fields – from artists and metalworkers to upholsterers and carpentry aficionados. Whatever their particular skill, a shared appreciation for quality and skill is essential. Because craft is a central tenet of Lemon’s identity, much of what we create is done by hand – from wallpapers to furniture manufacturing. Our business has a huge emphasis on craftsmanship. We are not in this field to produce irresponsibly, but rather to create pieces with care and made mindfully with attention to detail. To that end we partner with young as well as established designers to create collections in line with our design philosophy.
