About the Item

Good size and highly stylish antique bookcase with all working locks and keys. When it comes to antique furniture, historically, bookcases are the most sought after in the world. The Dutch Arts and Crafts style is unique in its own right and it is the one that comes closest to the furniture designs of the American Mission Style and the British Arts and Crafts. The Dutch Arts and Crafts pieces of furniture are very 'strict' in design, but the subtle, decorative elements make them highly stylish and wonderfully timeless. This particular bookcase is very rare, because of the unique and so beautifully hand carved owl sculptures on either side of the top. With the owl being the international symbol for wisdom and learning, this bookcase could not have more stylish and appropriate carvings as these owls. For centuries, knowledge and wisdom has been passed on through books of all kinds and to have found such a stylish and meaningful, antique bookcase in this very good condition, again, felt like a blessing. New (in circa 1910), this bookcase would have cost close to a half years salary for the average working man. Former owners clearly took real good care of this Arts and Crafts bookcase, because it is in superb condition, both inside and out. It is entirely original, all bookshelves are adjustable in height, all black keyhole decorations are still intact, all doors still open and close perfectly and all come with a perfect working lock and key. All glass panel doors are the original ones as well. We feel blessed that this rare Arts & Crafts bookcase with the stylized owl sculptures too found its way to our store. It will take great care of your favourite books and there also is room for antiques and collectibles in the open niche and even some room for some drink glasses or a tea service in the top middle section of this cabinet. Over the many decades this bookcase has also grown an amazing patina.
