19th Century Country French Painted Confiturier, Cabinet

About the Item

19th Century country French painted confiturier ~ cabinet is a charming ode to the rural life in France, but with typical French flair! The beveled top is only 18 inches deep, making it very traffic friendly. A full width drawer with just a modicum of bordering appears at the top, accessed with a steel bale pull. Steel hinges mount the finely detailed door below, fitted with an arched chamfered panel and carved with just a touch of foliate flourishes. A steel key guard stands sentinel over the keyhole, and the door opens wide to reveal surprising storage with a shelf inside. The apron is traditionally scrolled and carved with a single flower flanked by foliate sprays, which in turn are flanked by the scrolled legs. A multi-coated painted finish completes the look, having achieved a lovely patina over the decades! Circa 1880s. Measures 45H x 30W x 18D.

19th century French Henri II neoclassical walnut confiturier, cabinet is a stellar example of the petite buffet with one door affectionately called the confiturier because of its original design being intended to store confit jars in the kitchen. At some point it became obvious that a very useful miniature buffet like this would be ideal for other rooms, and the genre blossomed. This example, rendered from sumptuous French walnut, features neoclassical architecture including turned columns carved with fletching on the face fitted with Doric capitals on each cornerpost, flanking the stylized pyramidal heraldic crest on display in full relief at the center of the cabinet door. Fletching also appears on the drawer facade above, with the entire affair graced with fine molded detail. Ideal as a bathroom vanity cabinet...
