Mid 19th Century Burr Oak Buffet Cupboard

About the Item

A fine quality, mid 19th century, Victorian burr oak buffet with very attractive carved decoration and moulded panels to upstand, over squared corner supports and further tier, with two superbly figured, panelled cupboard doors below enclosing open cavity, raised on original plinth base. Generally antique buffets were made to stand alongside sideboards and serving tables on the walls of a dining room. They are of course incredibly functional with a huge amount of display and serving space. This particular design also has the added feature of a small cupboard to the bottom which can be used to store aware a large amount of unsightly clutter if required. This buffet is constructed from burr oak, sometimes referred to as pollard oak, which is a hughly decorative timber and retains a lovely warmth to it. As with burr walnut, burr maple, burr yew and any other woods which are constructed with burr veneers the item is much rarer than its counterparts constructed from normal timber as there was simply far less burr veneers available, resulting in it being far more expensive to purchase. Perfect for a whole host of spaces around the home due to its excellent versatility and functionality this 19th century victorian buffet has been attended to in our workshops, by our highly skilled, traditionally trained antique furniture restorers before being offered for sale. This means that it is very much in retail condition and ready to be immediately placed into the home, or office. Circa 1860. Measures: Height 60in. Width 54.5in. Depth 21in.

    Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A delightful Regency Period burr oak miniature chest having Superbly figured top above two short & three long drawers with Original brass knobs flanked by elegant fluted stiles raised on Original brass ball feet (Often much debate is had as to whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who is looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents, or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few articles were made as scale models in advance of a road trip during which the salesman would travel the country showing prospective clients the kind of items they could produce back at the workshop and take orders from. This particular miniature chest of drawers is probably the latter and would have been made as a sample piece. The construction is exquisite and the attention to tiny detail phenomenal in all honesty. They work that would have gone into constructing this with all of its fine details would actually have been more of a challenge and taken a more skilled craftsmen than its full size counterparts would have done. It is also super quality and unusual being constructed from burr oak which has taken on an exceptional rich colour and patina over the years of its life. A really quite charming piece of antique miniature furniture...
