About the Item

PORTOIS & FIX Factory for Furnishings and Fittings The cabinetmaker Portois & Fix was founded in 1881 by Anton Fix (1845–1918) and Frenchman Auguste Portois. The heyday of the company was around the turn of the century. In 1899, new and modern premises were built in Ungargasse from plans by Max Fabiani. Apart from the work of in-house designers, the company produced furniture by such notable artists as Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann and Leopold Bauer. Portois & Fix participated with notable success in various exhibitions both in Austria and abroad. PORTOIS & FIX SIDEBOARD "MODEL LONDON" designed by: Robert Fix, Vienna 1900 executed by: Portois & Fix solid Macassar ebony and veneer, geometrical inlay, copper fittings, marble top H 88 cm, W 124 cm, D 62 cm Our sideboard comes from a dining room set that was first exhibited in the winter exhibition at the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry in 1900/1901. It was part of a dining room ensemble with tectonically clear lines and a very useful design. The decoration consisted of purely functional elements – copper fittings, copper shoes on the feet etc. (1). A table made in the same way was successfully presented at the 1st International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Turin in 1902: "[…] Furniture designed by Robert Fix is full of ideas, comfortable and elegant […]" (2). In the same year, the room was to be seen at the Austrian Exhibition in London with a different sideboard and other fittings. In Vienna and Turin, the furniture was presented in rosewood and in London in Macassar ebony. The fittings varied. Various combinations of chairs were shown with the table – with and without arms. Usually there were metal cuffs on the chair legs, which is typical of Portois & Fix.
