18th Century Italian Rosewood Table Cabinet (Vargueño or Papelera)

About the Item

an Italian rosewood table cabinet (vargueño or papelera) with brass ornaments and inlaid incised bone decoration, there are eleven drawers (two bottom drawers are double width and appear to be four drawers) and one central cabinet door, it is decorated with crowned double headed eagle keyhole escutcheons and inlaid bone flowers on the top and sides , there are wrought iron handles each side, on wooden ball feet. Italy. 18th century Papelera is the Spanish term given to any type of chest used to hold documents, papers, and writing materials. In particular, the term was applied to an oblong Renaissance chest, similar to the vargueño (wooden cabinet of mixed Spanish and Oriental origin) but without the drop front. Notable for its skillfully executed and exuberantly rich decoration, and often with carved colonnettes and pilasters, this type of chest was Spain’s most distinctive and finest piece of cabinet work.
