19th Century English Walnut Cabinet in the Renaissance Manner by Gillows

About the Item

A Gillows Cabinet in the Renaissance Manner Constructed in walnut, part ebonised, and dressed with convex en grisaille painted plaques; rising from oblate bun feet, having a shaped lower shelf, with an elliptical painted plaque depicting a Roman warrior, to the rear panel, within a carved interlaced strapwork frame; two reeded circular columns carved with relief foliates, terminate in grotesque masks, conjoined by a swept arcading support the single panelled door upper section, and an elliptical painted plaque depicting Venus, enclosing a shelved interior, is  within a ribband carved frame; the angles carved with ram heads, flanked with martial trophies, and surmounted by a scrolling broken arch pediment, centred about a cartouche with Mercury's caducceus; further plaques with mythological affiliations, including Tritons, Neptune, and Hippocampi, inter alia are to the sides and cornice. The top edge of the drawer stamped by the maker 'Gillows', and numbered 1970. Circa 1875
