19th Century French Renaissance Two-Tiered Cabinet

About the Item

19th Century French Renaissance two-tiered cabinet is a marvel of the cabinetmaker's art! Designed as a repository for personal belongings of the gentleman of the house, such pieces were usually found in the study, drawing room or library. Hand-crafted from old growth oak and hand-forged steel, it was literally meant to last for centuries. A classic crown lords over the upper tier, defined by bordering with a demilune fletching pattern. Fletching continues on the sides of the corner posts framing the raised and beveled side panels. The front facade, however, is where most of the sculptor's attentions were spent, with an elaborately fully carved double panel design featuring arched panels carved with winged angels. The lower cabinet starts with a fully carved drawer tier using fletching again as the motif, and again framing the door below which is also carved with two panels, but this time nordic visages surrounded by stylized foliates, all surrounded by fletching motif. Each door is hung with a single large steel barrel hinge, and the drawer is fitted with a single steel bale pull. Bold base molding and bun feet complete the exterior appearance, and the doors and drawers all open to reveal surprising storage within. Circa 1850s Measures 71.5H x 42.5W x 18D.
