Art Deco Amboyna Veneered Stepped Console Cabinet with Drawers, circa 1930

About the Item

A most interesting and imaginative piece, this fine amboyna veneered console features a stepped top with a pair of central doors with a repeating cove form that is opposed in the outward curls of the vertical planes on either side of the console and the outward curl of the feet the case rests over. Harmony and symmetry of parts is carefully attended to in every aspect of the form. Both door of the center open to reveal four drawers of equal dimension, these crisply hand dovetailed and crafted with precision. Flanking these are a pair of outward opening doors that reveal shelved cabinet spaces. The gilt bronze hardware on the console is replaced but highly appropriate. The use of the exotic amboyna wood is powerful, the unending chaotic swirl of the grains a perfect compliment to the curves and coves of the facade. For anyone passionate about the unusual and striking creations of the Art Deco movement, this is a most interesting strikepoint piece that flawlessly compliments the dining room, a large entryway to the home beneath a pier mirror, works smoothly in the bedroom as a chest of drawers and any number of other design scenarios. Measurements: 35” H x 51 3/8” W x 21” D. Condition report: Old refinish. Bronze pulls replaced, original holes patched. Veneer patch above right door escutcheon; door swings open as there is no key; left door with added latch. Some veneer chips/losses, some minor veneer patches. Light scuffs, dings and abrasions (including inside of doors and case), overall the surface remaining quite excellent; some color variation throughout the veneers.
