Basilica Hutch by Laylo Studio in Solid Wood, Blackened Steel, Brass, and Glass

About the Item

Natural walnut, blackened steel, satin brass, tempered glass and merino wool felt. 5 Drawers 2 glass framed doors fixed height shelving - 40” wide x 84” tall x 24” deep. Custom hutch built in celebration of the four centered arch - an attractive architectural form that appears in both Islamic and English historic architecture each with specific nuance. Basilica borrows this distinct geometry to create a personal shrine for displaying that which you hold dear. Two framed glass doors swing open effortlessly on self-lubricating, offset-pivot hinges and snap shut silently with felt-stopped magnetic closures. The hand-formed blackened steel framework supports a perforated metal shroud that drapes over a solid wood cabinet filled with felt-lined, dovetailed drawers. Machined brass pivoting pulls adorn the surface of the wood drawers juxtaposing contemporary with antiquity. Hand carved wood legs feature “honey-dripper” ribbing and allow for easy leveling of the cabinet on uneven floors. Made entirely by hand in our Chicago studio. Available in custom dimensions, configurations, and finishes. -- LAYLO is the studio practice of Sam and Lydia Link. Founded with the intention of building through the exploration and integration of traditionally siloed crafts, the partners design and independently produce limited edition, functional works in their Chicago workshop using both contemporary and age-old equipment and techniques. Metal fabrication methodologies revolutionized by the last century of industrialization convene with imaginative woven elements and detailed woodwork to culminate in contemporary pieces that span eras and disciplines. As a result of a dedication to creating their work themselves, Sam and Lydia believe that the objects that arise from their collaboration are imbued with their presence as artisans. Rooted in diligent process, their “slow-cooker” approach to design and manufacturing exists in opposition to the 24/7 production schedule that commands the market environment. As a result, the collection of work is informed by Sam and Lydia’s personal connection to the manual manipulation of material in addition to the time and labor required to bring the work to fruition.
