Belgian Brutalist Cabinet in Black Lacquered Oak

About the Item

Cabinet, lacquered oak, brass, Belgium, 1970s This Belgian sideboard features a clear rhythm and flow established by means of a well thought through lay out that is utterly well-balanced. The carved geometrical shapes on the door panels immediately catch the eye and are the signature for this item; a design that is established during the seventies when Brutalism was at his highest level specifically in Belgium. This movement is an architectural style started from the mid-20th century, aiming for raw, geometric and compromise-less buildings. Characterized by blatant concrete-skeletons with geometric patterns and Puritan materials. In decorative arts brutalism is highly represented in furniture design. The cabinet convinces visually through its repetitive and asymmetrical pattern on the front of the sideboard and the stabile construction. Another feature that is very attractive is the round brass key that is situated on the higher part of the sideboard that breaks up the dark and solid piece.

This mischievous sideboard mirrors the European Gothic Revival period of the nineteenth century by means of the heavy black stained wood. The design seamlessly blends with any interior bringing the old antiquated ambience into your home. The whole construction is solidly built showing the typical characteristics of the designer duo Guillerme et Chambron, par example the graphic pattern of carved lines on the sliding door panels, add a wonderful rhythmic and haptic surface to the front.
