Ernst Schwadron Limed Oak Cabinet

About the Item

Presenting BG Galleries' exclusive re-edition of a custom design by Ernst Schwadron and executed in the workshop of Vladimir Kagan's father in 1949. Two door cabinet of harmonic proportions, constructed of white oak set on a trapezoidal plinth base and a single fixed vertical divider with adjustable shelves on either side. The double doors are mounted with brass knife hinges and are fitted with magnet spot closures. Cerused finish. See our separate listing ref. LU886611250183 for the actual vintage original piece, then see Image number 13 which shows Schwadron's original drawing from 1949 for a set of three cabinets sharing a single plinth base, for use as a hi-fi cabinet and cocktail bar. He created this as well as other sophisticated modern furnishings for the Riverside Drive apartment of Mr & Mrs. Norman J. Liberman in 1949. We have recreated these cabinets to Schwadron's exact specifications as executed by Kagan in 1949 at Kagan Woodcraft Inc. The butterfly handles are incised with Schwadron's distinctive signature diagonal cross cut pattern, a motif he used throughout his career. See the image of the street embedded utility covers of his family's construction and ceramics company Bruder Schwadron, Wien as well as the fireplace surround in the drawing for Rena Rosenthal, New York. The young Vladimir Kagan was an apprentice in his father Illi's workshop and made all of Ernst Schwadron's furniture designs. In recent years, Vladimir recalled "those damn diagonal cuts were really a bitch to do." As you can see in image 20 Vladimir Kagan was clearly so inspired by Schwadron's design that he created his own version but with tambour center doors. Presently we have one available for immediate shipment. Thereafter lead time will be 5-7 weeks. Ernst Schwadron, born Vienna, July 1, 1896, died Lenox Hill, NY, USA, March 3, 1979, began his career at his family's acclaimed ceramics and tile company, Bruder Schwadron of Vienna. Ernst started working as an architect in Vienna in the late 1920s, focusing on apartment interiors and furniture design. His signature interior designs, furniture and lamps were typical for the restrained Viennese modernism of the early 1930s ("Wiener Wohnraumkultur"). By the mid-1930s Schwadron was well established as an architect and his works were published frequently in European architectural and design magazines. He fled Vienna in 1938 and settled in New York where he worked as chief designer for the interior design company Rena Rosenthal Design, where he also met his second wife Gladys. He later founded his own company, Ernst Schwadron Inc. on Madison Avenue for 30 years.
