Books, cards, figurines, art, liquor, and an infinite amount of other trinkets can be put on display in a sophisticated, stylish manner, especially in open designs such as this European cabinet. The solid wooden structure has subtle decorative elements paired with simpler solutions like the straight face frame and top. European cabinetmakers and designers created versatile and functional models from solid wood. This cabinet is an exemplary European 20th century design, with a single shelf in the middle. Dividing the space in two, the shelf makes the design perfect to display anything as the sides are made of glass. This creates a classic look, while the open front allows the most eye-catching detail to stand out: the orange velvet inlay. Delicate objects can be safely stored and displayed on the soft velvet, and visually it creates an accent that draws the eye. The lower part is equally enticing with four thin, Marlborough-reminiscent legs and carved details. The display cabinet style is designed for displaying curios, which are simply collections and treasured items. With its beautiful wood surfaces and velvet accent shelf, this cabinet is sure to bring the coveted vintage charm into any space. Condition: In good vintage condition. • Wood Turned Chairs with Woven Rush Seats, Europe Ca 1940s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Mid-century designers were eager to break free from the aesthetics of the past and experiment with new forms, and techniques. At the same time, especially in Europe, the modernist design movement was often based on traditional styles and techniques, such as turned chairs. Turned chairs — sometimes called thrown chairs or spindle chairs — represent a style of Elizabethan or Jacobean turned furniture that had a vogue in the late 16th and early 17th century. The technique was carried on to the 20th century and was widespread in Europe as well, where craftsmen created durable pieces for various interiors and purposes. In turned furniture, the individual wooden spindles of the piece were made by shaping them with chisels and gouges while they were being spun, or turned between the centre points of a lathe. The construction of this pair is evocative of the more robust Arts and Crafts Movement, featuring subtle decorative elements such as the finials atop the backs. The sphere-shaped finials aren’t the only ornamentations on the design; the shape of the two splats on the back, the carved stretchers and carving on the feet are all decorative features that make this pair visually arresting. In later turned chairs, like this pair, rush seats were common. Here, the seats are woven around the frames with a light colour that beautifully contrasts to the dark, patinated wood. The partnership of the two natural materials is very effective as well; the wood and rush pair...

In 1931, aged 29, Jean Royère (1902-1981) resigned from a comfortable position in the import-export trade in order to set up business as an interior designer. He learnt his new trade in the cabinetmaking workshops of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris. In 1934, he signed the new layout of the Brasserie Carlton on the Champs Elysées and found immediate success. This was the beginning of an international career that was to last until the early 1970s. A key figure of the Avant-garde in the 1950s, Royère tackled all kinds of decoration work and opened branches in the Near East and Latin America. Among his patrons were King Farouk, King Hussein of Jordan, and the Shah of Iran, who were captivated by his freedom of creation and his elegance and entrusted him with the layout of their palaces. Royère pioneered an original style combining bright colors, organic forms and precious materials within a wide range of imaginative accomplishments. In 1980, he left France for the United States, where he lived until his death. Jean Royere (July 3, 1902-14 May 1981) was from a privileged social class and lived a pleasant childhood in the French capital. However, this young man left this comfortable career and choose a more risky path: the designer career, field in which he was a passionate and talented artist. He started as an employee in a furniture factory boulevard Diderot, located in the Faubourg Saint Antoine, epicenter of Parisian furniture makers. In 1933, he received a prestigious order from the Carlton on the Champs Elysees. His career took off and a year later, he was in charge of the contemporary furniture section at Pierre Gouffé...
