Pair of 19th Century English Side Cabinets Attributed to Gilllows of Lancaster

About the Item

A magnificent pair of 19th century Goncalo Alves with sienna marble tops side cabinets attributed to "Gillows" of Lancaster. The sienna marble top of breakfront form, above an ormolu mounted egg and dart moulding, over four pleated material and interlacing brass grill inset doors, enclosing two adjustable shelves again constructed in the finest Goncalo Alves wood, raised on plinth base. Circa 1860 English.

    A pair of Louis XIV style gilt-bronze mounted calamander breakfront side cabinets, the Algerian brèche sanguine marble tops above a cupboard door incorporating Japanese lacquer panels, Edo period 17th century, opening to reveal a single adjustable shelf, on later spiral fluted tapering feet. Circa 1830 English Footnote: These opulent English cabinets, conceived in the Louis XIV style, employ an array of exotic materials which when coupled with the finely chased gilt-bronze mounts point to a commission of some importance. The vivid brèche sanguine marble tops were mined in Algeria - a source of exceptional marbles championed by British diplomat and naturalist Sir Lambert Playfair (1828 –1899) following a visit in 1880 – and the highly prized Japanese lacquer panels would have originally formed part of an Edo period chest...

The shaped top tier with brass gallery above a bevelled mirrored back resting on a beautifully figured D-end top with shaped brass galleries, above a frieze drawer, above an inlaid panelled door flanked by bow fronted inlaid panels, resting on four slim and slender tapered legs with brass capped toe. circa 1900 English Artists Biography: Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. Edwards & Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu. Edwards & Roberts was one of the principal London companies working in the taste of the late 18th century. They started business in 1845 and by 1854 were trading as "Edwards & Roberts, 21 Wardour Street, Antique and Modern Cabinet Makers and Importers of Ancient Furniture".
