Portuguese Renaissance Cabinet, 17th Century

About the Item

A rare and valuable cabinet from Portugal in great conditions made of Vinhatico (Madeira Mahogany or Canary Islands Mahogany) a rare wood from the Madeira and Canary islands in the North Atlantic Macaronésia. A two doors and two drawers piece, a early “Estilo Nacional” example of Portuguese expansion of materials and techniques. The cabinet began to be used more frequently in Portugal from the 16th century onwards, being used to store silverware, fabrics, 'merchandise', in short, both current and valuable objects, and therefore they did not fail to have the necessary hardware on the doors, namely locks and bolts.
