Unique Low Cabinet with Intarsia by Viktor Lurje for Wiener Werkstätte c. 1926

About the Item

Unique low cabinet with intarsia designed by the architect, artist and craftsman Viktor Lurje (1883-1944) and manufactured by Wiener Werkstätte GmbH, circa 1926. Together wit Oskar Strnad, Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach, Viktor Lurje is one of the best-known representatives of the Wiener Werkstätte (WW) and of the so called "Viennese living space culture". “ARCHITECT VICTOR LURJE, BERLIN - Viktor Lurje is a young architect who studied at the Wiener Technik under the famous Professor Karl König and is now working in Berlin. Always a lively spirit, rich in imagination and invention, he always knows how to give his work an original impact while maintaining his personality. In the exhibition center that he built in Berlin in 1924, he shows an architectural rhythm in the harmonious and logical organization of the interiors and in the details. This work shows mastery of form and material, and particular utility. The whole is skilfully treated and has those characteristic features that characterize Lurje's architecture. In his marquetry, the artist shows great individuality and beauty, his designs are quite happy and unique. They show a particularly developed imagination, a very special aptitude for this branch of art and a knowledge of the technique of inlaying wood, combined with a poetic inspiration. His marquetry, like his various pieces of furniture, are of great interest, one feels that his art is the result of a deep study, in everything there is real thought work. That Lurje is an artist of lofty ideals is evident in all his aspirations, he possesses unflinching taste and a refined sense of harmony and tonality, qualities that characterize his works.” A. S. Leventus, Moderne Bauformen 1927, p. 497. Viktor Lurje collaborated between others with Josef Hoffmann in Vienna and with the architects Theodor Fischer and Emil Fahrenkamp in Germany. Literature: Innen-Dekoration 1926, p. 230. Illustration: Viktor Lurje, Die Hirschjagd/ the deer hunt, drawing.
