Early 18th Century Geometric-Front Chest on Chest

About the Item

An English early-18th century oak geometrically-panelled chest on chest ca 1710-1720. Queen Anne / George I period. NB. This is an interesting example of a transition from the late 17th century into the early part of the 18th century. Very often this attractive geometric form of tall chest, highboy or tallboy, was split to be sold as two separate chests. It is most unusual to encounter these in their complete form. Old brass 'pear drop' mounts correct for period but not original, however the escutcheons probably are. Good faded surfaces, and of useful size. Note the bobbin-turned mouldings applied to the drawer dividers; a 17th-century feature. The boldly-projecting bolection cornice is further indication of an early period. Waist mouldings and bracket feet are original. Oak drawer linings and retaining the original pine backboards. References: Note similarities in a slightly earlier piece from Ickworth Abbey, Suffolk, in Ralph Edwards CBE FSA 'Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture', Hamlyn, 1972, p. 200, ill. 7.

  • Early 18th Century Coromandel Lacquer Corner Cabinet
    Located in Lymington, GB
An early-18th century Coromandel lacquer corner cupboard or cabinet. This is rare - high quality Coromandel lacquer work (incised decoration) - not to be confused with the usual English japanned versions. This is also referred to as Bantam work, originating in Bantam, Dutch East Indies, and China, for export to the European market. The subject matter is of a major pavilion with numerous courtiers - most unusual to see only females - it has been suggested that they may be concubines to a Mandarin. All of high quality and in the sought-after and refined chinoiserie taste. In very good unrestored state, retaining vibrant colours and all its original hardware. This is a chic antique, and makes a lovely chinoiserie drinks cabinet...

  • Early 18th Century Japanned Double Corner Cabinet
    Located in Lymington, GB
A rare chinoiserie standing double corner cabinet, or cupboard. English, George I period, ca 1720. Often erroneously referred to as lacquer work, this is in fact japanned. Beautifully decorated with idyllic scenes of rockwork, pagodas, people, trees, birds, water, with bridges and a boat. This is a lovely and very useful addition to a room - where corners can present furnishing dilemmas - and this is an ideal antique drinks cabinet. These have always been very hard to find, as opposed to the more usual Georgian hanging corner cupboards...

  • Rare Charles II Period Chest
    Located in Lymington, GB
This exceptional 17th-century chest / cabinet has one long working drawer, and one deep drawer, with cupboards retaining internal shelving below. All faced with elaborate, mitred, geometric mouldings, applied split balusters, carved corbels, roundels and engraved mother-of-pearl and bone panels. Some panels apparently in ebony. Dentil cornice to the frieze. Bun feet replaced following the original design. Great colour, old surfaces and overall condition is excellent. It conveniently divides into two sections. Circa 1660. Provenance: Lisgoole Abbey, N. Ireland. Literature: R. W. Symonds, 'The Present State of Old English Furniture', Duckworth, London (1921) fig. 7, dated 1673. Vis a very similar 17th c chest. Percy Macquoid RI, 'A History Of English Furniture - The Age Of Oak', Lawrence & Bullen, London (1904-08) p. 76, figs. 140 & 141, for two similar chests of ''well considered proportions and details’’. Figs. 203 - 210 exhibit further similarities in design, and MacQuoid states that “the fashion for these chests must have been great, as many varieties of them… followed rapidly upon one another in date” [sic] pp. 97-99. Viz p. 77, fig. 141 (Oak chest with drawers). The top opens in a long drawer, below is a very deep drawer, panelled in strong projection, the bevels of which are of so-called zebra or snake-wood. The lower portion of the chest, opening in two doors... [sic]. Nb. The chest illustrated in Macquoid is of oak, but in 1680 it was probably to match some other furniture, painted black and lacquered in what was then termed ''The Indian Taste'', so very fashionable for a time. The bone and pearl inlay is very cleverly imitated in the lacquer-work. Ralph Edwards CBE FSA, 'The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture', Hamlyn, London (Fourth Impression 1972) “The next stage in the evolution (of the chest) was delayed until c. 1650, when a hybrid form, half cabinet and half chest...
