English William and Mary Period Oak Paneled Chest of Four Drawers

About the Item

English William and Mary period oak paneled chest of four drawers. Each one of the graduated drawers has a different pattern of molding on the drawer front, a detail which was used for the more expensive chests of the late 17th century, as it took more time and more expertise to execute than simple rectangular outline molding. This chest has paneled sides and retains its top and bottom moldings, but the stump feet that it would have originally had are replaced with bracket feet; one backboard has been replaced and the drawer bottoms were reinforced to eliminate sagging. As is usually the case in chests of this period the side runners were abandoned and removed as they generally broke and the chest runs on normal runners (those introduced in the 18th century) which do not have that issue of fragility. This chest has never been refinished and retains a lovely deep patination. The brass have been replaced, circa 1690.
