French Marquetry Commode with Marble Top, 19th Century, Signed
About the Item
An exquisite French Louis XV-XVI transitional style commode with dore bronze ormolu mounts and original marble top.
The fine marquetry depicting a townscape was crafted from the most beautiful exotic fruitwood and mother of pearl inlay in the Topino style. Two spacious central drawers, 'sans traverse', without crossbar, display laurel pulls framed within a foliate ormolu band with a central ormolu keyhole escutcheons. Acanthus and foliage motif mounts and chandelles elegantly frame the corners and saber legs. Acanthus and scroll sabots are well fitted to the feet of the saber legs. Adding to the fine quality of the piece, the commode is surmounted with the beautiful original marble top featuring a cove edge. This piece is an excellent example of marquetry and bronze work; condition is commensurate with age and use.
