Hans Weiss Custom Chest of Drawers

About the Item

BG GALLERIES SPRING INTO SUMMER SALE Custom designed and built dresser/chest of drawers by Hans Weiss, New York, 1960 for a an interior design project for a whole apartment. Top slim drawers with hidden groove for pills are solid walnut. The light colored drawers is bleached mahogany. The top is walnut laminate. Pulls are walnut and solid brass. It is actually in two sections: the main six drawer dresser which is 80.5 inches wide and the left sidecar cabinet which is 20.5 inches wide with a single drawer over a door which opens to two pull-out open storage trays, one with diagonal inserts. The main chest of drawers is finished on both sides so it is possible to use it and the side car separately. (Two additional legs would need to be made for the sidecar so it can stand alone). Main chest is shown here with four tapered walnut legs but originally it had six: there were two additional legs in the middle of the drawers, front and back. One leg was missing and is being duplicated as we speak. Hans Weiss was a Viennese Jewish émigrée to New York in the late 1930's. His work, both residential and commercial is extensively documented in the Gottscho-Schleisner photographic archives in the Library of Congress under his own name and as Weiss & Basser, the name of his partnership with fellow emigree, Wilheim Basser. Basser passed away in 1958 so for this particular interior design project undertaken in 1960 Weiss was working on his own. It is likely that the carpentry and cabinet makers may have been fellow Austrian refugees, Hans Herschan and Eric Nasch of New York, both relatives of Basser. It is not known when Hans Weiss passed away but we do at least know that he was born in 1900 and still active as late as 1970 when he updated the grand living room of this particular apartment in The Normandy at 140 Riverside Drive, between 86th and 87th Streets, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City. Hans and his wife, Ethel, also lived in the same building. References: Hans Weiss and Weiss & Basser, Gottscho-Schleisner Collection, Library of Congress.
