Important 1925 Dresser with Birchbark and Inlaid with Minerals

About the Item

IMPORTANT 1925 DRESSER WITH BIRCHBARK AND INLAID WITH MINERALS Unique piece Sophie Gallardo & Georges Cassan Height: 93 cm Length: 137 cm Width: 56 cm Birch bark marquetry and mineral inlays Interior: turn inside out calf This 1925 dresser opens with two curved doors in the front. The sides are also curved. It rests on four delicately worked feet. The chest of drawers has been reworked by two artists: Sophie Gallardo and Georges-Guillaume Cassan. They transform old furniture into contemporary works of art by combining modernity with natural materials. Sophie Gallardo studied interior design, then trained in the restoration of paint on wood to rehabilitate antique furniture. She learns ancient techniques from renowned professionals and works mainly with birch bark. Sophie Gallardo and Georges-Guillaume Cassan's work allows them to enhance the value of the bark that is scattered throughout the forest. They invented an atypical process while developing a unique know-how in the world: the birch bark-based maquetery which dresses "Haute Epoque" furniture. The choice of this type of bark imposed itself on the two creators, on the one hand, thanks to the singularity of this white tree spotted with black, and on the other hand, thanks to the symbolism of the birch which is a sacred tree for the Amerindians, symbol of wisdom. Each piece is unique and requires several months of work. They work on beautifully crafted furniture (from the 17th century to the 1970s), often playing with imperfections in the bark and accidents in the Material to create graphic forms and singular patterns. This birch bark veneer is then inlaid, in a sparse manner, with a wide variety of minerals such as labradorite, rock crystal or amethyst. This process gives the furniture a natural and whimsical appearance, transforming each piece into a cabinet of curiosities.

  • Important Cabinet with Two Body in Blackened Wood Carved and Engraved
    Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
IMPORTANT CABINET WITH TWO BODY IN BLACKENED WOOD CARVED AND ENGRAVED ORIGIN: FRANCE PERIOD: 17TH CENTURY Height: 188 cm Width: 135 cm Depth: 53.5 cm Blackened wood and veneer: rosewood, ebony, pear, mahogany Framed in oak wood A real ceremonial piece of furniture, this two-part cabinet opens with two historiated panels and two drawers in the upper part and two leaves and two belt drawers in the lower part. Richly worked, it offers both inside and outside a floral decoration, finely engraved which contrasts with the importance given to geometric lines. This duality, typical of this type of cabinet, confirms its dating and its origin. In addition, the gilded metal locks and fittings enhance the sumptuous trait of this piece of furniture and also contribute to its ornamentation. Furniture of predilection for “enclosing the most precious things” (Furetière, Dictionnaire, 1690) the appearance of cabinets in the 16th century accompanied the development of wunderkammern, these cabinets of curiosities enriched both by the vogue for the antique and by distant expeditions which bring back with them natural wonders and rare testimonies of distant civilisations. The curious, combining fortune and culture, brings together antique medals, rare plants, fossils, or oriental ornaments. This meeting of pieces which embodies much more than their material reality, a subjective evocation of all the riches of the earth and all the knowledge of men, acts in the eyes of its owner like a microcosm of which he is the master and which he enjoys according to his will. This is how the first cabinets were designed to be transportable, often wooden structures calling for riches only those they housed for a collector who refused to part with them, even temporarily. In the 17th century, the cabinet gained in technical complexity and luxurious materials until it could no longer be moved itself and became a prized and expensive collector’s item...

Provenance: Gismondi collection, before 1973. Historical Context This walnut wood and walnut burl cassetone is a remarkable example of Mannerist art applied to furniture in the late 16th century. While the Mannerist movement appeared and grew in Florence before acquiring its international stature it also spread to Northern Italy as soon as the late 16th century early 17th century. To the opposite of the rest of Italy where classic motifs are adopted very early, northern regions maintain the use of Renaissance motifs very late all through the 17th century. Sculpture now leaving the austere environment of churches and civil buildings appear in private homes where it graces state rooms and studies. This craze is particularly expressed on furniture from Liguria and particularly in Genoa where are produced highly carved furnitures with figures and spectacular decors called bambocci.
