Very Good & Unique Biedermeier Period Inlaid Ash Commode, Germany Circa 1825

About the Item

A very handsome & capacious three drawer commode in highly grained ash, the top inlaid with rectilinear parquetry motifs in German walnut, surrounding a heart-shaped marquetry motif centred by a silvered Christogram (IHS), intersected by marquetry motifs of an anchor & cross – the three motifs being symbolic of Love (Heart), Hope (Anchor) & Faith (Cross), flanked on either side by the initials P & F in Old German script. The overhanging top drawer surmounting two graduated full-width drawers, their fronts inlaid with contrasting light & dark parquetry motifs in walnut & maple, and retain their original embossed brass backplates, bail handles & iron locks - however their keyholes have been filled in. The front of the case flanked on either side by ebonized tapering columns with embossed ormolu mounts, raised overall upon splayed rear supports & carved paw-shaped front supports. The aforementioned Christogram which appears on the top, together with the two initials, suggests that this may possibly have been a dowry gift.
