This superb vintage chest of drawers showcases the sleek lines and intriguing visual design of Art Deco period furniture produced in Italy during the 1930s. The simple rectangular shape of the chest itself is raised on a two part plinth base (plinth meaning solid to the floor) that has a grooved pattern above a solid painted green section. The fact that the chest is wider than the grooved section that is again wider than the solid green base performs a visual feat of elevating the chest in an architectural manner. The inversion of scale is one of the aspects that identifies the Art Deco period date of this chest of drawers. The top and sides are sheathed in walnut chosen for its powerfully striped grain that has been placed on the chest so the grain stretches from front to back. The clean edges at the top and front of the chest emphasize the line of the grain. There are four drawers to this chest with the upper drawer faced with maple in a pale colour to contrast with the darker walnut. Please note that this drawer possesses a raised, cushion shaped profile with a gently rounded appearance that extends outward from the chest itself. The subtle way in which the curved facade of the drawer captures and reflects light as it moves across the surface is quite beautiful. All four of the drawers retain the original cast brass handles notable for their symmetry and sculptural quality. The front area of the chest that contains the three drawers is defined by the inlaid band of repeated band known as a "meander". In each of the four corners where the meander meets there is a three leaf palmette set at a 45 degree angle to direct the eye inward to the centre section of the drawers. A contrast is used again here as the meander pattern is a different colour than the walnut and the maple timber and this decorative attention to detail is another element that identifies its Italian origin. The centre section of maple surrounded by the meander pattern is also raised in a cushion pattern like the top drawer with the brass handles affixed in the same position. The hardware only appears to be in different locations because of the optical illusion given by the arrangement of the different timbers and colours used on the chest. The handsome quality of this chest is a pleasure to see and the graphic quality it brings to an interior is most desirable.
