Antique French Carved Oak Corner Cabinet, Circa 1885
About the Item
Designed to maximize efficiency without sacrificing floor space, this oak corner cabinet was hand-carved in France, circa 1885. The form is reminiscent of a bonnetiere, which is a single-door wardrobe (smaller than an armoire) that first appeared towards the end of the 18th century. Typically found in entry halls of houses in Brittany and Normandy, a bonnetiere was a storage space for women to hang coats, hats, and bonnets (hence the name).
A three-paneled door opens on large, iron hinges, revealing a well-done green upholstery with a small shelf near the top, intended to store head coverings, and a metal hanging rod beneath, allowing coats to hang without becoming wrinkled. The slightly recessed panels have thinly carved moldings that replicate the contour of each pane. French wax has been added to the oak, which has brought out the rich patina of the wood, amplifying the softness of the carvings. The overhanging crown consists of five layers of thick molding, mirrored on a smaller scale by the carved plinth, above three large block feet at each corner. Our carved oak corner cabinet can be used anywhere storage is needed and space is at a premium.
