Brazilian Modern Credenza & Divider in Hardwood & Granite, 1960s, Brazil

About the Item

Available now, this Brazilian Modern credenza & room divider in hardwood and blue granite made in the 1960s in Brazil is nothing less than spectacular! This exquisite piece is made in old Brazilian Rosewood (known as Jacaranda), Granite and is covered with rosewood veneer. The piece features four doors, two drawers and five shelves in hardwood and formica. This piece can be used for multiple purposes. Can work as a credenza, a bar and a room divider as the wood is finished on both sides and doors can open from both sides also. The Rosewood veneer is nothing less than spectacular. In this case the joiner used wood coming from the roots vs using the tree itself. This is what gives the almost hypnotic curves to the wood. The wood has been refinished and besides, the marks of age the credenza is in excellent condition. Brazilian rosewood, also called Jacaranda, is perhaps one of the most beautiful woods in the world. It is regarded as one of the finest tone woods; hard, stiff, and highly resonant with a glass-like ring that sustains; it has a floral scent, like roses, thus the name. However, extensive logging over the past three centuries has virtually eliminated this tree from the Brazilian forests, so that today it is not supposed to be logged. The only material that can be sold legally is old stock. By owning a vintage piece made of old Jacaranda, you’re not only getting a beautiful collectible but also helping this species to recuperate. This Brazilian Modern gem has all the fun aspects of a true bold Brazilian Modern piece: Clean and straight lines, exuberant Brazilian Jacaranda and is extremely practical, something that Brazilian designers started to explore during the country’s modernization as space started to be limited and furniture needed to solve more needs. Equally as practical as beautiful, these pieces will look awesome with a modern, mid-modern or contemporary environment next to a club chair and a floor lamp. If you're looking for a vintage piece that is one of a kind, has Midcentury swagger, look no further! Size: H33.5, W59.1, D18.1 (in) H85, W150, D46 (cm).

    By Jean Gillon
    Located in New York, NY

This piece has all the components of a true Brazilian Modern piece with straight almost brutalist silhouettes softened with smooth curves (seen in the drawers and edges) that resemble Modernist architecture from Brasilia of the sixties. Owning a Jean Gillon piece like this is not just about acquiring a beautiful piece of furniture; it's also about possessing a part of Brazilian design history and culture.
