Classicistic oak cabinet Germany (Moselle region) Oak Louis XVI circa 1780 Dimensions: H x W x D: 238 cm x 165 cm x 71 cm Armoire standing on ball feet in solid oak. Two-door cupboard with sweeping coffered corner bevels. Sides also coffered, dowelled joints. Doors with carved musical instruments with festoon hinges suspended on fittings hinges and curved upwards. Slightly broken volute gable. Crowning urn vase decorated with flowers and garland. Original lock. Original fittings. Inside three additional shelves. In the 18th century, the art of furniture reached its peak in terms of both stylistic refinement and craftsmanship. Probably never again has furniture of such perfection and preciousness been created. Condition: Restored ready for daily use. For all our antique furniture you will receive a detailed expertise. Not only the tree itself is considered to be very robust with a life span of 500 years and more, but also the wood itself is particularly durable. Oak plays a special role in all epochs important for the antique trade. As a solid wood it was used at all times, but oak was also well suited as a carrier material for applied veneers, as it does not warp much and was always considered a characteristic of good quality. As European native wood, which was found in large quantities, oak was also relatively inexpensive and easily available. The wood grows in a straight line and is one of the coarse-pored woods. Characteristic are the medullary rays, which run in the wood transverse to the annual rings and are visible in the processed condition as so-called "mirrors". Waxes were used to completely close the pores of the wood. Oakwood is not suitable for shellac polishes. The burl wood of oak was also popular for the design of furniture fronts. Small branches surrounded by irregularly grown annual rings in the trunk create the centers of circular and wave-like structures in the wood as dark cores. Oakwood is well suited for carving, and so it was often used for sculptures. Due to its good carving properties, oakwood reached a true flowering during the Rococo period, when carvings were very popular both figuratively and ornamentally. Especially the antique furniture from Aachen and Liège is absolutely famous and a household name to everyone in the art and antiques business. Oakwood has a light brown tone when untreated. Light and air make the wood darken, and oakwood has often been stained dark. The oakwood used at the time our antiques were created came from the region where the furniture was made.
