Antique English Inlaid Burr Walnut and Leather Davenport or Ship Captain’s Desk
About the Item
Fine quality antique English leather top inlaid burr walnut davenport or ship captain's desk with lift-up top revealing a series of side by side small drawers. The exterior has a bank of useful drawers one over the other on the left side with a matching bank of faux drawers on the right side with their original walnut round wooden knobs. The back as well as the kneehole area are both inlaid with highly figured burr walnut and the front has two columned pilasters that are carved solid walnut; on their original casters. The top leather writing surface has been replaced at some point and is in pristine condition (as is the entire desk.) The term "Davenport" comes from the original such desk made for a Captain Davenport by the illustrious firm of Gillows in the early 19th century and were profusely made of various forms and woods during the 19th century. They were used by ship's captains because they are a small desk for the tight quarters of a cabin but were compact and had quite a lot of storage space.
