Biedermeier Style Burled Birchwood Secretary Desk by Colombo Mobili

About the Item

BIEDERMEIER STYLE BURLED BIRCHWOOD SECRETARY DESK Executed by Colombo Mobili, ca. 21st century Item # 312SBP08Q A truly remarkable Biedermeier style secretaire a'abattant desk from the custom furniture maker Colombo Mobili of Italy. It is a 21st century piece that has been made with the highest level of attention to every detail, most notably in the brilliant burlwood veneers that were selected for every primary surface on the desk. These are book-matched to create chaotic but symmetrical landscapes that follow through the drawers across the entire desk. A distinctly architectural piece, the "tempiesto" form of the top resembles a grand classical building with domed temples on either side, these ebonized for contrast against the rest of the surface with inset domes over stepped staircases that are ideal for showcasing Grand Tour sculptures or similarly fabulous objects. These are also clever hidden compartments, each temple withdrawing to reveal a storage space built into the back of each. The central door opens to reveal a shelved interior. This is an entirely self-contained section and it lifts off of the rest of the desk to allow for a slightly lighter and much safer transport. Beneath a full-width top drawer, the fall-front lowers with high-quality brass arms that are designed with enough tension to allow for a controlled descent of the front. It reveals a well-fitted interior with a central fan-inlaid prospect door over a drawer flanked on either side by six pigeon-hole letter slots over an open compartment, all raised over three smaller veneered drawers with ebony borders. The lower body features three more full-width drawers, all drawers being dovetailed and of the highest grade. The reverse is branded with their maker mark. An incredible piece that was built to last centuries. Measurements: 75" H x 20 3/4" D x 41 3/4" W; writing surface is 29 3/8" H over the floor with 28 3/8" knee clearance Condition Report: Very fine vintage condition; some minor chips and nicks, including several along the left edge of the fall-front, a few edge chips along the bottom edge of the right side, other minor scuffs including to the corners of the feet. Overall remaining almost untouched. Remarkable high grade of craftsmanship throughout. Comes with four keys. • Worn and Patinated English Antique Pine Tavern Table Desk
    Located in Shippensburg, PA
ENGLISH WORN AND PATINATED PINE TAVERN TABLE Circa the mid-19th century, with three drawers in the apron Item # 402VDP08Z A richly worn tavern table with a wonderful all-over surface patina from well over a century of life and active use, this gorgeous English tavern table features a large pine table top projecting over a simple frame holding three generous size drawers in the front. Each is hand-dovetailed in the typical manner and is hung with an oversized turned wooden knob. It is raised on four incredibly sturdy and robust tapered legs with large exposed pin joinery throughout. The legs are stretched with short stretchers tenoned into the legs on either side and two full-width stretchers that are dovetailed into the side stretchers. Incredibly beautiful and also super practical for so many applications. It makes a fantastic desk or working table, but is generally used in the kitchen as a breakfast table or as a working table/island. And the rich surface patina gives the new owner a great deal of permission to actively use and contribute to the surface history without fear of damage or deterioration from a few stains or abrasions. Measurements: 29 5/8" H x 28 5/8" D x 80 3/4" W Condition Report: Large square of pine set into the table top to probably replace a knot or area of damage; a stretcher at the back (between the legs along the length of the table) was removed at one point and it appears the center stretchers that are dovetailed into the side stretchers were added - a rather old alteration that allows for foot room. Inactive pest damage throughout with significant wear. About silla antiques...

The doors are beautifully embellished with fluted pilasters boasting Ionic capitals that are exquisitely detailed with rich undercutting. The lower case features a brushing slide situated over five rows of graduated drawers, the second from the top cleverly fitted with a green baize writing surface that pushes back to reveal storage space beneath while the faceted glass inkwell bottles (one missing the lid) and double trough pen tray are situated along the right side. The timbers selected for the case are above reproach and present with a ruby hue throughout that is incredibly appealing, this finished under a glowing silky French polish to the mahogany veneers throughout.
