Rare Hand Painted Pedestal Desk by the Artist Ambrose Thomas Marquis d'Oisy

About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely hand painted circa 1940 solid oak best by the Marquis d'Oisy Ambrose Thomas (1880-1959) The painted pedestal desk is circa 1940-1950, decorated and painted by the Marquis d'Oisy, with a leather top, raised on pedestals with drawers, the sides and drawer fronts painted with flowers and urns, Amand Edouard Ambroise Marie Lowis Etienne Philippe d'Saint Andre Tournay, Marquis d'Oisy, was the nom de plume of Ambrose Thomas (1880-1959) who lived in Pledgdon Green between Elsenham and Broxted, Essex. Little is known of his early life, but he was a Benedictine monk and moved to North Essex in around 1917. He designed church furnishings, most notably in Thaxted church, painted furniture and was involved with staging and designing pageants in Essex and the Midlands. He was a man who reinvented himself numerous times, was declared bankrupt in the early 1930s and was seen as 'one of those artistic hangers-on to whoever lived in the great house'. The desk itself looks to be a late 19th early 20th century solid oak pedestal desk, its very very heavy, disassembles into three easy to transport pieces, the paint finish is in Fine order throughout Dimensions: Height 74cm Width 129cm Depth 78cm Knee hole space, height 68.5cm, width 42cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses Condition: Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.

Throughout its history the firm suffered a number of serious fires, the first of which occurred in 1890.
