About the Item

Unique and very stylish antique desk from early 1900s Amsterdam. When you don't know much about the history of a unique antique then sometimes you need to look better at it than others have and the answers might come to you that way. When we first saw this piece of furniture, our knowledge about this Style told us it was a typical Dutch Arts and Crafts antique that was hand-crafted around 1915. Apart from the design and the oakwood exterior with the coromandel handles on the drawers it has exactly the kind of patina that ties in with pieces from that era. What makes this piece stand out from any other antique desk that we had ever seen is the design itself. Fully closed this is a relatively small filing cabinet, but that is also why this is such an exciting piece. In the earliest years of the 1900s the Dutch Arts and Crafts Style had primarily 'taken of' in Amsterdam. As you may know, most rooms in the lower priced homes and offices in Amsterdam are rather small and narrow. We believe that this unique desk may very well have been designed and hand-crafted for two business partners who had just started their business in one of those less expensive and not very roomy office spaces. Only god knows where those first steps and this first investment has taken them. We believe they had good taste and their need for an unusual but stylish piece of furniture has brought the world this unique desk. In this day and age it can be used for all kinds of purposes. However, everybody can use a desk and a cabinet with some handy drawers and this timeless and unique antique also is a great talking piece. One that triggers people's imagination and one with superb decorative value. The only thing that could do with some improvement (in our view) are the folding legs at the outer ends. When extended they are free-standing (and not secured). Still, they really don't seem to make anything 'unusual' like this anymore and if you can already see this desk gracing your living space then maybe you should be its next custodian. Mind you, our fair price even includes perfect packing (in a custom made crate) and also worldwide shipping from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 workdays.
